From many years I never missed to pay a visit to Sewri, Mumbai to spot the pink beauties. But I always saw them from a great distance. Never till now I had seen them so closely like I saw them on my “FLAMINGO SAFARI” at The Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Centre in Airoli, Navi Mumbai.
The center has a main area which has information on birds with images & buttons when clicked would make sounds like the birds make.
Another area covers the boat ride, the crab point and the mud-skipper point.
We first completed the information center along with the AV’s & moved towards our boat ride.

While the ride started we could spot some cranes and egrets flying over the sea. As we moved deeper for almost 10km the color of the sea changed from blue to pink & soon on my left and right I could just see them either floating, trying to take a flight or flying above the boat.
A patch of the sea changed its color from blue to pink |
The sounds they made were more like the quack quaks of ducks but in between the rythm changed from soft to loud and then loud to soft.
The guides on the boat were BNHS trained and told us that Flamingos are social birds, and tens of thousands live together and migrate to one location to another with their clans. When they migrate they usually migrate in the night.
The flamingos’ feathers, legs, and face are colored by their diet & they are social birds, and tens of thousands live together and migrate to one location to another with their clans. |
Their feathers obtain a wonderful rosy pink color from pigments in the organisms they eat. The flamingos’ feathers, legs, and face are colored by their diet. They usually feed on algae and tiny animals such as shrimp, mollusks, and insect larvae that live in the mud at the bottom of shallow pools.
Their name FLAMINGO is derived from Spanish flamengo which means "flame-colored"
We requested the boat man to stop the boat so we could capture some beautiful shots until we visit them again :)
One of my favorite shot, while the boat went closer this gentlemen was 1st to take this flight |
